Pickup trucks are a great investment and almost all are good at holding their value in comparison to sedans and SUVs. But over the years, there are a few that have held a pattern of depreciating slower than the rest. Here’s what we are currently seeing hold the best resale value:

  1. Toyota Tacoma
  2. GMC Sierra
  3. Toyota Tundra
  4. Ford F150
  5. Chevrolet Silverado

Though, these are the current suggestions from our managers, it’s important to understand how the resale value is evaluated and how it can change year after year.

What to Look For

There are key markers that make a specific pickup truck valuable. Let’s start with the basics.

Why are prices generally higher for specific models? There are 2 answers to this: Supply & Demand and Brand Name.

Supply and demand affects pricing for almost every product, and trucks are no exception. The more trucks of a specific kind are available, the lower the resale price will be. For example, right now RAMs are saturating the marketing (high supply), making their price lower. Contrarily, a rare truck will continue to hold its value even after years (low supply, higher demand).

Next, you have the big brand names people favor. For example, Ford and Toyota. Those brands have a long standing track record of quality pickup trucks, but this doesn’t mean the competition isn’t on par. A full evaluation of a product is suggested.

Also, our managers mentioned a few other features and specs you should keep an eye out for. These could increase the value and help the truck maintain a higher resale value:

  • Ecoboost Engine (higher MPG and can tow just as much as comparable options)
  • Longbeds (rare)
  • Crew Cabs > Quad Cabs (truck becoming more frequently used by families)
  • Higher than Average Towing Capacity
  • Rare Modifications i.e. lifting, rims, tailgate features
  • Trucks with Limited-Time Factory Features, e.g. massage seats

The above are only a few of the value-adding features you may see in your search.

How to Keep Your Truck’s ValuePickup Truck

Once you do find the pickup truck you wanted, it’s important to retain as much of its value as you can. The best ways to do this is to service the vehicle regularly and add in protection i.e. undercoating.

Undercoating, especially in areas that snow, is extremely important. It protects your trucks underbelly from corrosion and rust caused by debris, salt, water, and more.

Lastly, you can put money into your truck and get some modifications. In doing this your truck becomes a rare find and increases it’s resale value.
